How To Ride With A Passenger: The Essentials
Motorcyclists Confederation of Canada

Are you riding with a passenger? Here’s a quick guide to ensure a safe and smooth ride!

  • Gear Up Properly: Always follow the motto: “Dress to slide, not to ride.” Both you and your passenger should be fully geared up. Helmet, gloves, jacket, jeans, and boots are non-negotiable—leave the laces at home! Make sure the helmet fits perfectly. Safety first!

  • Prep Your Bike: Before you hit the road, double-check the essentials. Is the fuel topped up? Are the tires inflated? Are the grab rails and passenger pegs secure? A breakdown with a passenger isn’t fun.

  • Prepare the Rider: If your passenger is new to motorcycles, give them the rundown on how things work—helmet, visor, manual transmission, and a few hand signals to keep communication clear. Explain the “rules of engagement” (no random cow-pointing!). The more they know, the smoother the ride.

  • Mount Up & Get Comfy: Guide them on how to hop on the bike and hold on. Side stands can help with stability as they settle in. Remind them to keep their feet off the ground at stops and encourage a relaxed, balanced posture for smoother riding.

  • On the Road: Take it easy with acceleration, braking, and turns—the extra weight changes how the bike handles. Talk about the route before starting, and give them a heads-up if you’re hitting the highway. Regular stops to check their comfort will go a long way to making it enjoyable!

Bonus: If they love the ride, you might inspire them to get their own bike!
